A quiet time in rural Wisconsin last weekend. Team Sankary headed up after work on Friday afternoon. The plan was to go to the Thirsty Otter in Balsam Lake for their Friday Fish Fry. Apparently the word has gotten out that the Otter Fry is outstanding eats. Place was packed by the time we got there, around 6:45. As we waited in the parking lot, trying to convince my shy kid to walk in and see how long the wait for a table would be, a nice well lubricated patron came wandering out, stuck his head in my truck and reported, in a bourbon laced spew “don’t know what your waiting for, they’re out of chicken.” “we’re here for fish” “thereouttathat too” he reported and promptly staggered over to his car.
Dang. Meant we were off to plan B, Friday Night Taco’s at the Blacksmith Shop over on the east side of Balsam lake. Not even close, Blacksmith tacos have one thing going for them, they’re all you can eat and they’re only $8.00. The place was packed with refugees from the Otter. Well, when you’re in rural Polk county you only have so many choices.
This was the first weekend in a long time that we really had nothing to do. The last of the demolition project on the big chimney had been removed, there’s still some dock work to do, and a planter box to set and fill, but we’re getting there.
Spent the day on Saturday fishing mostly. Oldest kid and I hit the lake hard in our first real fishing outing. We were about a month late getting out for the first time. Never mind, the fish were more than cooperative. We actually “slayed” ‘um, boated more than 20 in our outing, most of them better than 2 lbs. Not a bad day bass fishing. I managed to boat a fish I would call a PETA special. The fish had a lure hanging out of its mouth proving to me that fish, having not developed a cerebellum, thus can not reason, think, feel, perceive anything but the most rudimentary sensations and.. well, are fun to catch and release with no harm done.
I’ve mentioned in the past that one of my favorite dishes are my own words, and I’m eating them now. When I wrote this post this spot was filled with a diatribe about a jet ski operator who had the nerve to disturb my peace and quite over the weekend. An anonymous reader left a comment on this post, I’m thinking it was the fellow I was writing about.
He was angry and rightfully so, and for pissing him off, calling an anonymous person a dickhead, and making up a bit of story about my reaction. For that I sincerely apologize and offer the following-
1) You’re probably a new reader to this site. You may not realize that this site is alot about humor. I tell a lot of stories here, most are at least partially fabricated for humorous affect. This was no exception. I don’t mess with other people stuff, including their cars. I never actually walked over, I wouldn’t do that.
2) I would LOVE to see the 10-4 water sports ban enforced on this lake, as of right now it is completely ignored. We have a ton of people skiing and jet skiing right up until sunset and occasionally after. Which is also against the law in Wisconsin. I am biased I’m afraid. I’m not a fan of jet skis or waterskiing. I don’t tube, I haven’t allowed my adults kids to bring jet skis to the lake, and I won’t pull kids in a tube. They have to go elsewhere for “fun” as they always tell me.
3) I apologize for being a dickhead, a douche, a pussy and all the other stuff you’ve mentioned. As I’ve said I write to amuse, nothing more. I look for situations that are funny or portray my crochitiness. It happens that from time to time I cross a line, get to specific, people are offended and for that I’m sorry.
Jon Doe, I would have loved to respond to you personally but you didn’t leave an email or name, so I’m afraid this is the best I can do. Sorry again for offending you.
