Weekend Update

Weekend update.

We’re sedate around the Casa-Del-Sankary these days. The four of us who were around this weekend are all suffering rather acute headaches due to sudden caffeine withdrawal. Nespresso machine busted. I know, it’s a first world problem clearly, but its a HUGE but so are ‘roids and gout and this is on par with those. The machine, rather than puncturing the crue cups and blowing steam through them to create the delicious espresso drinks. Instead the machine is crushing the crue cups like an aluminum cans in a recycler.

We’re all suffering the DT’s.

Good news is when you pay a quarter of a grand on a coffee maker you become a privy to an “experience” as opposed just owning a piece of shit. So, the fine folks at Nestle are sending us a new one, and a new subscription to crue cups.. more coffee, more hits, more caffeine.

Last kid left for college today. House is back to quiet. Food bill down to $23.00 a week for the three of us. We’re back to clothing optional around the house.

Which why it’s so quiet around here, the other two have left until I start wearing long pants again. Don’t blame them.

Cold this weekend. Ass numbing. Can’t wait for the walk to the bus tomorrow. I’ll keep my drivers license handy in case I have to prove my gender at some point. -8 is the forecast, makes everyone an “it’.

Which comes first- Suck or Hate?

P1000344A quick dash to the lake this weekend. Mrs S had a little home improvement project to accomplish. She installed a new floor in the kitchen. By she, I mean She and a good buddy of mine, She and He installed the kitchen. I as in Me did not. When projects come up and Mrs S starts picking teams to work with her, like when she repaired the ceiling in the entry way that was damaged by last years ice damn, I am never in the running for a starting spot on the team.

As a matter of fact when teams are selected, it never enters her mind to select me. Which is fine by me because A) I’m used to it, a lifetime of participation in neighborhood sports has prepared me well to deal with the shame of never being picked in the first round, or any round and B) I’m not so handy. No, that’s being kind, I suck at a lot of home improvement projects. And it’s probably OK to suck at home improvement projects when you hate doing them. Which comes first you ask, “suck” or “hate”? I don’t know, but it’s a good philosophical question and might be the new title of the self help book I should write.

And believe me, I do sucketh so, especially projects which involve color or the application there off or  those which require tremendous detail, or anything with electricity. When it comes to the house I’m a fat color blind, ADD  affected demitard. But at least I know myself.

For some reason however, I do rock at plumbing projects. Water and porcelain I’m good at.

Speaking of ‘lectricity, little case in point- 10 years ago I installed a 3-way switch in the hall, the light fixture has three different switches up and down the hall. To this day, I don’t know the exact combination of switches on and off to achieve a state of illumination. I walk up and down the hall flipping shit until I get light. Luckily any one flip achieves darkness. Mrs S complained about this from 2002, when I installed it, to 2006 when she realized I wasn’t going to do anything about it. She has however figured out how to get light on her first try every time. This I find odd given that she can not figure out how to run our AV system beyond “on”. She has difficulty finding the right input; TV, DVD, Apple TV is a challenge despite the fact that you simply press the HDMI button until the right one comes one, and recording a show always requires hands on and commentary free support. This role has been played by her sons over the years, but with them gone..  Comment free is getting harder and harder.

In hindsight I wonder if it’s because it takes 4 remotes to execute any function on that system? Hmmm…

Not there aren’t some things I’m good at, moving refrigerators and stoves with nothing more than my brain and dolly for example. I can pretty much move anything with a dolly, which must be why I have 3 of them in my garage. Seriously, and I only explain how one of them got there.

We ripped up to the lake Friday night. We’re to that time of year, that post Labor Day time, when leaving at 6:00 or so on Friday night means we don’t arrive at the lake in daylight. It also means, and this gets worse as the fall goes on that deer are roaming everywhere, which means I don’t take my short cuts on secret county roads that are identified only by letters anymore. Too many deer to hit in the dark.

Why the letters BTW? Someone in Wisconsin decided long ago that the best way to keep out-of-staters from finding there way around rural counties and at the same time give local kids a jump start on reading is to name every  county road with a letter.

For example my secret route to our palace by the lake is as follows:

94 East to Wisconsin, get off at the Roberts exit Hwy 65. Enjoy your last stretch on a number. 65 jogs around a bit. Oddly enough, and I didn’t see this coming, especially in Wisconsin, the national craze to install English style roundabouts has manifested itself in the Badger state. 4 have been installed in the 4 miles through Roberts WI.

Just so we’re clear let me make a simple observation for you; The United States passes on the metric system because collectively the nation can not absorb change or figure out base 10 counting or believe it to be a commie plot, but then we impose roundabouts on unsuspecting farmers who use these roads for the giant 1 1/2 lane wide combines every Fall?

They’ve been working on these things all summer and now they’re done. Just as the combines are to come crawling down the highway. The Hipster urban planners adopting the latest trends in road design clearly don’t realize how rural roads around here are used. Sounds like a lawn chair and an ice chest are in order to watch one of these roundabouts this fall, the entertainment factor might just surpass the first warm weekend of the spring at the boat ramp for sheer human drama and lunaticerry.

I digress.

Basically  to get the house take 65, make a right on E, 6 miles then left on T. Stay on T for 18 miles, then a Right on A, A takes you to GG then because they’re repaving E, I hop over to H, pass I to Balsam lake and go back to G to then over to E and up to our road.

If you live or travel in Wisconsin you know how these directions go and you know that there is no rhyme or reason to the lettering process, at least none I’ve been able to figure out except I’ve never come across a county road B. Odd.

So the floor the went in with very little drama, the appliances were returned to their original homes but not before I was chastised for not removing everything from the fridge before moving it. “I did too” “No you didn’t “Yes I did” “Sank, everything in the fridge is piled up one side, the DOWN DOLLY side. You didn’t take a thing out of there” “Not the beer”. She double checked. “You only took out the beer” quizzical look, “I prioritized the important stuff.”

Suck or hate.. hate or suck?? Hard to know.

Weekend Update- Memorial Day Edition.

Split time this weekend- the lake place and the home place.

Started the weekend in the Dermatologists office, my annual brush with mortality. I came away from that pretty much unscathed for a chance. Actually that makes  two a row, which pleases me to no end.

Friday afternoon Mrs S and headed up to the cabin to work on the pontoon boat. We got the furniture reattached and by most accounts the boat, which will be renamed the SS (Sank Ship in case you were wondering) War Eagle. She’s resplendent with navy carpet and some orange trim the only thing missing a giant AU in the front carpet and the “Beat Bama’ logo on the back.

Personally I’d like to see the youth do well in a couple classes at Auburn before we go all in on the family watercraft if you know what I’m saying. Or rather, Just say’n.

Friday evening we had the first bonfire of the year. Not so much for the bonding effect of a lovely campfire on a summer night, the motivation was rather um, to destroy about 4 years of back checks and documents Mrs S had accumulated and didn’t want to feed through her $8.99 POS shredder that chokes on two ply toilet paper much less more than one piece of paper at a time.

By the time we were done the fire pit was one gigantic pile of ashes which magically were completely gone in the morning after a thunderstorm and some rain.

IMG_0010Saturday Giggs had a friend up for the day, Riley the golden lab from the next door in Apple Valley. Riley hitched a rid up with some of the family members and they had a splendid day, Riley chasing shit around the yard for hours on end and Giggs attempting to herd Riley. They have a great relationship because each dog gets what they want. Giggs did have to draw line however at lake entry. Giggs, having no legs is a bit of wader in the lake, definitely not a swimmer. Riley being a  lab enjoys the water. Giggs had to patiently wait on shore for other dog to swim back, and like a true herding dog waited in the down position like a sheep dog waiting on the next command. Breeding for traits is very interesting.

Then again, no corgi like the water, and Giggs certainly enjoys a good wade when it’s hot outside.

Saturday dinner I whipped up Lebanese style. Some kabobs which had been marinating in olive oil and spices all day, I attempted my mothers baba ganoush, roasted eggplant puree with tahini, garlic, olive oil, and lemon juice. Having no recipe I winged it from a 27 year old memory of an observation of my mother making the stuff. It was decent enough but needs some tweaking. Since nothing as measured I’m not exactly certain how I’ll I do that.. but I will enjoy figuring it out.

After chow Saturday night Mrs S and the kids all bailed with our neighbors and it then got really quiet up there. If it wasn’t for the thunder and lightning I’d have had to start talking to myself.

Sunday I got up with great expectations of watching the Indy 500 and doing some work. New role at the office has me bringing home a lot of stuff these days and I was pretty sure at least one day of the weekend would be devoted to project work.

As it was we literally had no reception on Sunday. No TV reception for some reason. Now Blake Lake is on the far periphery of Twin Cities TV coverage, and all we have is an antenna, but we had been getting decent TV. I’m blaming sunspots.

After weaseling myself on invite to a friends for breakfast I managed to extend my visit through the morning and enjoyed a gratis bloody Mary while watching the race. Actually one of the best bloodies I’ve ever had. Full meal, marinated tomato juice and vodka. Good times.

After the race I invited the gang over to my place for more feeding and drinking and so it was.

Never mind that work thing mind you.

Sunday night we had a massive thunderstorms all around us, but someway, somehow we managed to avoid a direct hit and only had to suffer through the power going out. For 6 hours of so.

Monday I was home by 9:00. Mrs S met me at the door with a list. Somehow it had slipped my mind that my mother in law is coming to visit on Wednesday, which in my mind was three days away, but wit the holiday is actually only two days away and since we want her think we live in a model home for some reason, there was a lotta shit to do, which we did.

And now I have tiredness.

I did take a moment and think about the men and women in uniform who are putting their lives on the line in the service of our country. The meaning of the day was mentioned at dinner. I did not forget, like I did about my Mother in Law.

Or that we are about to have a high school graduation this week, my son of all people. Now since he’s the middle kid I figured we could ignore it all together and go to the lake, but on further reflection have decided to stick around and congratulate him, and all his class on their great achievement, they have met the most basic educational requirement of our society and have earned themselves the highly coveted Meeting Expectations.

I don’t get the bid deal on high school  graduations.

Weekend Update

Belated weekend update-

We attempted to squeeze a lot of crap into one weekend.

Friday night- Attended the 1st half of the Apple Valley Football Game. I’m always come away from those games feeling  good about living in Apple Valley, a very rare feeling for me.. Something about the local angle on Friday Night under the lights. My wife and I went to watch the dance team and marching band. It’s been a couple years since we’ve known any kids who played football, but we have at least 5 more years of the other dance and band, including our own daughter who we think might attend these games. Middle kid was there, hanging out in the student section, he was blessed with 2 hours of reprieve from his horrible cold he caught last week.

And passed to me as of today.

Went to the lake- At the end of the half with our lads down 38 to nothing we piled in the car and headed to the lake. Departure time, 8:50. We arrived at the cabin around 10:30, none the worse for the wear and we even managed to include the obligatory McDonalds double stop.

A double stop, what’s that? A McKeyD double stop is where we do that thing where I order an ice tea, and the dude asks me if I want sweet tea and I say no, I want unsweetened tea, and I say “don’t screw it up like you guys always do” and I pull to the window, and I get my tea and I start to drive away, taste it and it’s sweet tea and I pull back into the lot and go in and tell them “this is sweet tea, it’s supposed to unsweetened tea” and the dudes behind the counter look at each other and make a face like “that’s impossible” and then they taste it and start blaming each other and I have to ask nicely if they can just get me my tea so I can go and they say yes but nobody actually goes to the cup dispenser to get me a tea and thus explained how a lack of attention started this mess to begin with.

Arrived at the lake in record time on secret roads in the dark having traveled through the deepest darkest parts of rural Wisconsin. Adam Carolla playing in the back ground. Negotiated with Mrs S, if I’m driving, it’s going to be a pottyhumorfest and hell with the kids.

Little TV and soothing adult beverage and off to bed. BTW, fall at the cabin, great time to be there. What we give up in nice weather and screen door slams, bevies on the deck we make up for with crisp nights, campfires, fall colors and what had to be the most beautiful sky I think I’d ever seen. No moon, Milky Way so close you could touch it, so many constellations they ran into each other. It was so dark that even the star light could be seen on the lake. I love that. This time of year there aren’t many folks up there and it is, literally so dark, that the horizon is almost indiscernible.. amazing.

Café Wren Met the team from Reading Blog/Little Blake Lake for coffee and rolls at the Wren at 8:00 on Saturday am.  At 10:30 the grass had dried out enough that I could get the mower going and spent an  hour mowing the lawn. Finished the lawn, cleaned up inside and boom.. in the car and the road by Noon. Quick trip eh?

Stopped at McDonalds in New Richmond for the usual ice tea thing.. funny how in Wisconsin they never get this wrong, only in Minnesota.

House Cleaning Saturday afternoon we cleaned house a bit, mailed off some letters, went to the Leanne Chin for kids dinner. Kudo’s to the staff at the Apple Valley Leanne Chin for honoring the coupon that I got at the football game on Friday night, despite the fact that I didn’t have it on my person. I described well enough that they let me have it. Great customer service.

Saturday night dinner at Café Maude. Already reported on that.

Sunday Football- took the girl to the Vikings game on Sunday. Disappointing? For sure. Apparently no lead is big enough for this team. However, I love a Vikings game, win or lose, we had great seats and the crowd was into it, the venue was deafening and the game was a thriller, not the right outcome, frustrating, but good.

Losing the Vikings would be a stab in the heart for me personally. Mostly because it would be the second time in my life I’ve had to endure the loss of a beloved team.. I’m just now getting over the Raiders moving to LA when I was a kid and could not longer go to games with the Old Man. Lots of memories of my black and silver jacket, Raiders knit hat, I’d hate to have that happen again.

Sunday Dinner- Tilapia with homemade pineapple, pear and chili chutney. I don’t care for tilapia, but this was pretty decent, how could it not be with the chutney, wild rice and acorn squash with cinnamon.

After a long weekend sleep and just like that it was Monday morning.

Weekend Update

Weekend Update

This was one quiet weekend. Mrs S and the kids were in Illinois attending a family funeral. I had intended to go, but had a few conflicts come up that precipitated my staying close to home. So, after a long day in the office Friday I got home one super quiet house, just Giggs and I rambling around. I thought about a trip to the lake, but frankly I wasn’t feeling 100% Friday. As it turned out I was worse on Saturday. Asthma issues, basically all day made everything difficult. I think being alone with no stimuli other thinking about having a hard time breathing made things worse, nothing to take the mind off the situation.

Weather this weekend was grey flannel like. Conducive to sitting indoors and thinking of things to make in the Dutch oven. (I may have to surrender my “man” card for that one. Oh that’s right I gave it up when I carried a Missoni Print carryall (purse) back and forth on the bus last week).

I did spend some time in front of Netflix on Saturday. When you’re alone you can roll out of bed at 5:30 and go right to the Tudors. I’ve been trying to catch up on that show from when I ran out of interest and DVD’s back about 2009 or so. Matter of fact it had been so long that I wasn’t quite sure where I left off. The basic premise of the re-imagined version of the Reign if King Henry VIII is that the king was one randy guy, and lived in a court filled with intrigue, torture, and schtupping. Lots of schtupping. I would also point out the medieval  babes portrayed in Tudors have to be a lot better looking and exponentially healthier and cleaner that the real women of the time. That’s why I like TV, it fills in my imagination with what things should have been in my mind, rather that what they actually were. Reality is disappointing most of the time.

I managed to squeeze in 4 hours of Tudors on Saturday before heading off to the Famer Market. I’m going to miss the market when it’s gone in November. For $20.00 I can get a weeks worth of produce that tastes better than anything I can get at any local store. It’s usually not as pretty, but it certainly tastes better and is about ¼ the cost. Big win this week, honey crisps are back in season and arrived at a couple vendors. Watermelon guy, aka the worlds largest melon seller in the world, is switching over to squash now, which got me thinking, about time for some acorn squash soup.

After the Farmers Market, stopped in at Von Hansen’s for a meat buy. I was in the mood for lamb stew, buy alas, not much lamb, even at Von Hansen’s. No stew meat, but they did have shanks. Since lamb shank go for about $10.00 a piece and need four or five, I passed. Beef stew for dinner on Saturday night. Simple, real food that is quite tasty. After a purchase of ground beef, chicken breasts, chops and beef stew meat, and $43.00 spent, I headed back home happy to pretend that most of what I’d purchased was local. I’m not a big organic guy, not sure it makes a big difference, but I am getting more picky about local food. Of course recognizing that I live in Minnesota where strict adherence in winter can cause scurvy.

Then again, it is “Talk Like A Pirate Day” today so seems appropriate that a little scurvy would be appropriate. There ya have it.

My little trip to the markets was about all I could muster for the day. Literally I was out of breath and headed home where I did very little for the next several hours. Sunday was like a different day, I felt 100% better for some reason. That’s the crazy thing with this stuff, one day I’m about totally wasted, feeling like crap. A nights sleep and boom, rebound to normal. Or rather the “new” normal.

Sunday was  breakfast at the Bad Waitress in Minneapolis with a new friend I met in the Lodge. Really good guy whose company I’m enjoying more and more. Breakfast at the Bad Waitress was one of the best breakfasts I’ve had out in a long old time. LONG LONG time. I’d go back in a hurry.

After breakfast, back home for some football. Learning that this year, no lead is enough for the mighty Vikings. Made some awesome enchilada’s with a flank steak I bought last week and never got too. The recipe was a “makes it’s own sauce” kinda thing. Called for three TBL of chili powder, which I changed to 1 TBL chili and 2 of Chipolte powder. The end result was a little spicy for some of the family. Definitely had a pleasant heat and smoky flavor. That particular recipe called for a 2 hour simmer, so I had time to kill/nap.

Basically after having the summer off, the old Dutch oven got used twice in the same weekend. Both times with some success. Particularly the beef stew. I’ll post the recipe if I can remember it, it was one of those make it up as you go things.

It was a super slow day to be honest, watched Silence of the Lambs for the umpteenth time. I just love me some Hannibal Lechter, especially when I’m messing around in the kitchen.

Mrs S and the kids arrived home about 5:00 on Sunday night, two hours ahead of when I’d expected them. Greeted them with hot enchilada’s fresh out of the oven. They were tired, but, at least in the daughters case, not so tired that they couldn’t complain about spicy meals.

Sunday night I Skyped with the oldest kid. Now that he’s a Junior, and I hate to admit this, I kinda forget that I haven’t talked to him in a while. In this case I hadn’t spoken to him since he the day he left. August 20 or so, so it felt like time. On the other hand, neither one of us had much to report. This family thing is getting more and more difficult to figure out. I hate to think we’re going to disintegrate to the point where we’re only communicating by text once in a while.

Then again there some family members where even that seems like a chore. Mom.

And other than Mrs Lincoln, how was the play?

Weekend Update- Labor Day Edition

Nice long weekend spent on the shores of scenic Blake Lake. Twas a quiet one for your humble author here. Family did NOT make the trip, best buddy Giggs the Corgi DID make the trip. We had some  nice conversations, mostly around respecting the trashcan and not shitting on the dock. I know, dookie right on the dock when there’s a half acre of grass around it for your crapping pleasure. No respect, and kinda gross.

Not having anyone around I found myself looking for excuses to get in the car go places. Two trips to Cafe Wren in Luck for example. The closest place where I could get wifi access, not to mention a little bastion of progressive thought in a rural environment. I did meet up with a few friends over the weekend, most whom I’ve become aquatinted with thanks to this blog. Yeah people who have made the transition from virtual to actual. One family in particular has a couple of energetic young men, really young, and visiting with them is like a little flashback to when my lads weren’t in college or waiting to go to college. I enjoy hanging with them, and watching other people parent. Too late for me, but it fun to see how to do it right so many years later.

I do have to work on editing my speech however. Something about little ears… not that I ever did with my kids.

Had a couple movie nights at the Lake Estate- one night was Master and Commander. Watched that one with the dog and gin and tonic made with my new favorite gin, New Amsterdam. Not only does it compare, at least to me, with Bombay Sapphire and the entry Tanqueray,  it’s about half the price. Great for mixing. I digress.

Master and Commander whilst drinking English sprits. Perfect. Second night of the party was a screening of Viva Las Vegas. Who doesn’t love some Elvis for pure escapism? And WHO among you, males now, doesn’t think that Ann-Margret in her hayday wasn’t hotter than uh… well that’s exactly why the movie was screened to begin with, to prove/make my point about just how hot she was, and this was an era when attractive didn’t mean Emulate Barbie. Anyway, I digress yet again, but there a couple scenes in Viva Las Vegas were my point was more than made, most specifically the dance scene with the king at UNLV where she’s in the black stretch..

Never mind this is going no where good. I’ll think of her in Grumpy Old Men, more fondly than lustfully. Of course I’m of a age when I can’t say Ann-Margret without thinking of Ann Margarock and Viva Rock Vegas, the Flintstones classic. And, while we’re on the subject, I’m trying to find a recording of “Side to Side” by the Jubilee Four… uncredited African American group that sings in the nightclub. I’m going to have to break out Blue Hawai’i for next weekend me-thinks.

Sunday night I had a great time chatting and eating with team from Little Blake Lake or Reading Blog. You can find both in my sidebar. I always enjoy the conversation and to hold up my end of the deal on cooking, teriyaki steaks and venison steaks.. the venison marinaded in an olive oil blue berry concoction. I think fruit helps to dull the gaminess of the venison. Hope so anyway.

This weekend on Blake Lake was Transition Weekend. Transition from summer playtime to fall sportsman.. we’ll be taking the lake back next weekend thank you very much. Although it was so damned cold this weekend that the annoying jet skis and water skiers were at a bare minimum. We also transitioned from Summer, 92 degrees on Thursday to fall, 64 degrees on Sunday and worse yet, 39 for the low this morning. Time to starting thinking about fall leaves, bonfires, crisp nights and short days with good sleeping weather. Great sleeping weather actually, too good. Went to bed by 10:00-10:30 every night, partially because I had no one to talk to really. Which means I was up by 5:00 most mornings. Not really a problem, early risers on the lake are always treated to magnificent sunrises accompanied by the sounds of loons, eagles, crows, herons and lots of other unknown critters. It’s one of my favorite things to do, sitting on the deck at sunrise, coffee in hand, sweatshirt on, watching and listening to the lake wake up.

Wish I was there now to be honest, but I’ll be back in 4 days, again without family… this could develop into a bad habit if i’m not careful.

The Apple Tax

The weekend update is coming a tad early this week. Well, I don’t know when you’re actually going to read this as I’m up at the lake, and I’ve lost my internet connection up here. Seems that when I bought my new phone, Verizon didn’t care to include the wireless hotspot I’ve enjoyed with my last phone, with new one. I can still get it, but now it costs me $20.00 a month for it. Which sucks. Lemmie translate for you my conversation with my friends at Verizon.

“Thank you for calling Verizon, Can ya hear me now?”

“yes I can thank you. I have recently purchased a new phone and was wondering how I accessed the Mobile Hot Spot feature on my phone?”

“let me look you up”… Pause…. Pause…. “Ah mr Shnakcari, I see that you recently upgraded from a Palm Pre to an iPhone is that true?”

“It is indeed. I went large on the phone this time, Ma’am”

“Well Mr. Snackarai with your new phone there is a $20.00 monthly fee for hotspot access.”

WTF. “Gollie, I was told by the nice lady at that I’d have the same exact access as I did on my old phone”

“well Mr Snackarakski, you do have the same access”

“but it’s twenty bucks more ma’am. I thought it would be the same.”

“It is the same”

“$240 a year is not what I would call the same”

“I’m sorry Mr. Sank-a-ray’,

“Just call me ‘valued customer if you would’”

“Ok VC. Since you bought the iPhone we can charge you extra for stuff?”

“why?”

“because you want the iPhone, no one wants the pre”

Hmm, I had to think about that one. As I was uh.. doodling “bitch” on my note pad.

Sympathy

There is none. Nada. No one gives a shit about fat old white guy complaining about the data plan on his overpriced Apple iPhone from the world leader in nickel and dimeing customers. I’ve heard of the Apple Tax, that extra 30-50% you pay to use Apple products. Actually, I’ve come around now and I’ll gladly pay it, the stuff just works. I haven’t had to think about and G-d Damned driver in over a year. Haven’t had a f’n crash in a year and half.

I resent that I have to deal with it from Verizon.

“Valued Customer, you ordered the white iPhone didn’t you?”

“yeah”

“Technically we could charge you another $10.00 just because you have the hottest phone on the planet”

Good G-d, I haven’t felt like this since my trip to the Doctor last week.

Weekend Update

Quiet weekend at the lake. No friends, one kid for most of the time, no jet skis on the water, awesome.

With just the daughter to hang out with, there wasn’t alot to do. The good news is, I got to spend some quality time with her, if you count not doing much as quality time. I do. We did some yard work, took out the pontoon, watched movies, watched our beloved Yankee’s on TV (BTW gotta love Jorge Posada- a week after being told by the manager that he as “too old and really not good enough to play everyday anymore” he comes in as DH and has a 6 RBI day including an impressive Grand Slam, a well done by one of my favorite pin-stripers) The Middle Kid joined us on Saturday afternoon and we spent the evening eating and pontooning around the lake.

Perfect.

One nice thing about hanging out at the lake, I’m not as connected to the news as I am when I’m at home. This is a good thing when Michelle Bachmann wins a straw poll of 2,000 Iowa pig farmers and becomes a serious front runner for president on the Republican side. By her own accord “Liberals are afraid of me” and she’s right, I am. Scared to death would be accurate. Interestingly enough she won poll on the 35th anniversary of President Regan signing his monumental tax cut legislation into law that 4 year set the stage for todays deficit. It also set up American’s with the lowest tax rates in decades, brought lower under Bush II and which are now contributing to our massive debt problem.

On the other hand, I hear that Michelle paid for 6000 tickets to the strawpoll, and from that managed 4500 votes. Maybe there’s some hope.

Mrs S is still in California, she’s been out there for the last two weeks to help her mother while her Father recovers from a serious illness. Things have been quite dire over the last few weeks but the news has been getting better of late. We’re now cautiously optimistic, hopefully things can stabilize out there and she can feel good enough to come home, it’s been a long time.

Next week the Oldest Kid come to work with me for three days. The company has a project that needs some manual labor kind of work and he’s excited for a job where he can work 8 hours for three days, and wear an iPod when he does it. Supercool.

Closed out the weekend with a walk around Lake Harriet with a close friend who I don’t spend enough time with. She worked for me years ago and since gone on to greatness as another local company. We had a great walk with some great talk. One of those situation where the mentor becomes the mentee, and over 3.5 miles we had a lot of time discuss.

I feel better for it.

Weekend Update

Nice weekend at the lake, albeit not exactly quiet. The Daughter brought 3 of her girlfriends up with her, which if you can count makes for 4 teen age girls and I, at lease Friday and the first half of Saturday.

I can’t complain, the kids were fine. Actually they’re really good kids, but I have to say Teen Age Girls and Teen Age Guys area about as different as dogs and cats. Both genders seem to find things to do at the lake. Remarkably some of the same things; fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hanging out. Boys just do it with a different amount of energy than girls do. They do it in a way that leaves things broken and usable when they’re done with it. The girls on the other hand, oddly enough, kinda put stuff back when they’re done with them, ask permission for other things and generally tread a little lighter.

Until you engage in the teasing game. Boys are easy to tease, not even much of a challenge to be honest. You point out a a couple idiosyncrasies and just like that you da man. Girls on the other hand, especially teener girls… suffice to say they started teasing me before I could even get started.

Overall the weekend was nice, a colleague from work joined me Saturday afternoon. I took the kids to the Polk County Museum in town. The museum fills the old County Courthouse in the village of Balsam Lake. The museum has a little bit of everything, lots of stuff that was obviously in the estates of various county residents. There’s sections by township, another section by ethnicity, a section of churches, another by vocation.. there’s just a ton of stuff in there, a bit too much if you ask me. We’re I king of the museum I might change it just a bit and tell more stories about the development of county, maybe profile a few pioneers, towns, who knows. They certainly have the artifacts there to do a lot of things.

The weather was fantastic. After a severe front blew through on Saturday afternoon the weather changed dramatically. We went from humid and warm to crisp almost fall like weather. Sleeping on Saturday night was outstanding, windows open wide, fresh breeze…

The Cabin is being rented out this week so through cleaning. I had some adding machine tape and had the girls write in their best handwriting “Sanitized for YOUR Protection.” I taped them around the toilet seats to give the place that “old time clean” feel.

Week ahead promises to be a bit trying. Mrs S is in California all week on Family business, the kids and I are keeping the home fire burning and starting to wrap up the summer to-d0 lists. Wednesday the semi annual brush with mortality. More to come.

Weekend Update

Last Timberwolves game of the year for us. Sad. They sure didn’t win much, but the games were a blast and I’m going to miss hanging with the kid. Can’t wait to next year.. OH Wait, there isn’t going to be a season next year.

Mason’s Weekend- had a 3rd Degree  on Saturday. First time I was presided over a 3rd.. very nice. Doubly nice that the fellow going through was a friend. Even nicer.. that his father, a long time Mason, flew up from Tennessee to present my friend with a ring. Warm emotional experience for all. It was quite a morning. And we welcomed the new Mason the way always do, we attempt to end their lives by hazing them.. we force them to eat Kentucky Fried Chicken for lunch.

Damn near killed us all me thinks.

Saturday night was an amazing experience, I went to Target to pick up some new pots and pans. I know, hard to contain the excitement eh? My pots and pans were in bad shape and I’ve been bugging the CPO about it (Chief Procurement Officer). We finally agreed and off I went. I did some research and learned that I should never buy a “set”, get a lot of stuff you don’t need, and I really didn’t need a whole set. Mrs S suggested that I check out Kohl’s and Macy’s, get something decent.

Phish on that. If I can’t find it at Target I don’t need it. Came home with a 12″ Lodge Logic skillet that will come in handy for browning meat and other non-stick applications. A 3qt stainless saucepan from T-Fal that America’s Test Kitchen rated #2 just behind a Italian brand that was 6X more, and a “Green” non-stick deep flat bottom wok like pan that I can use for Asian cooking.

Made broccoli beef in it tonight and was told it was “better than any Chinese places version”.

Sunday, the annual spring Crap Harvest from the back yard.

I do want to call out my CyberPal Mark over at The Idiot Speaketh for his cross country bike ride. If you’ve not followed is pretty inspiring to see a guy commit to making a change like that and then to actually do it. What he’s doing is riding his stationary bike about 30 miles a day, and plotting his route on a map. I’ve been inspired myself. Matter of fact, it’s motivated me to get back in the pool. I’ve already noticed a difference in my stamina. I was a swimmer in when I was in grade school and high school, used to swim breast and fly. The first time in, I was barely able to do 100 yards. Honestly thought I was going to drown. 4 weeks later, last Saturday, I was able to do a 1200.. 48 laps.

Now I did as 6 sets of 8 laps, with rest stops in-between, and  it took almost an hour, but it counts. I got the stinky chlorine smell to prove it. That means that since I’ve started I’ve swam all the way down to the end of my lake, or about 2.5 miles. Not exactly the English Channel, but it’s a start.
