Quick NCAA Note

Seriously, I don’t think there is any better sport to watch than college hockey. The kids play hard, the game is fast, the rules make the game more fun than the pro game… all goodness.

And, was there ever a better championship game than last nights Miami Ohio v. powerhouse Boston College final? We watched with an alumnae of Ohio Miami. What a heartbreaker for her. The mighty Redhawks (formally the Redskins but we can’t have that anymore), in their first national championship game for any sport, evah- and in the NCAA Hockey Frozen Four for the first time played their hearts out. They were good enough that I forgave them the sin of sending even more improbable underdog, local favorite Bemidji State home Thursday. But alas, it was not to be. The better team won, but kudos to both teams and especially both netminders.
What an ending. Miami is up by two goals with 57 seconds left. 99 time out of 100, that’s a win in the books. But the scrappy Terriers, playing without a goalie the last 3 minutes, create chaos in front of the net and flip one under the goalies armpit to get the score to 2-3. Then with 20 seconds left one of the sweetest passes for a one timer I’ve seen to tie it and send it to OT.
In OT, a slapper from the point off the shin pad of a Miami player takes a weird turn and curves into the net for the win. Great game…
