2013 was a crappy year for blogging in general. Between the demise of the Google Reader and the increased demands on my creativity and joy, I had a hard time cranking out content. In most of the previous 9 years or so I’ve been writing in this space I averaged over 300 posts a year. In 2013 that number dropped in half. The result was a serious drop in my readership, which was never stellar to begin with. In an aside it’s always befuddled me that there are folks out there, on in particular whom I track only because she’s such a train wreck, who are able to put out content loaded with punctuation errors, misuse of capital letters a boatload of run-on sentences and topics about nothing who are able to attract 10K readers.
Blah blah blah.
Content hasn’t been so good around here either of late, and by late I mean in the last year or so. I haven’t been on MinnPost in a long time, which I like to use as a metric for myself. Three new editors over there in the last year or so hasn’t helped the matter.
All of this tells me that I need to step up my game. Except.. this is supposed to be a hobby not a job so what exactly am I stepping it up too?
Looking forward to 2014 I can already see two things happening that are going to impact things in this space. Free time; what little free time I had for this space in 2013 is about to get cut in half, or better by some changes I’m making 2014. More on that later. The search for new content is also getting to be harder and harder. When you live with three teenagers it’s easy, every day is a sitcom. When you live with one kid and wife, the sitcom aspect of life just doesn’t happen in the same. Not to mention what’s funny to me about something Mrs S said or did, may not be as funny to her, and certainly not something she likes hearing about from friends and strangers, go figure.
Funny how one extra X chromosome can make people so confusing to me.
In 2014 I’m going to be make a couple significant changes, upping the game on the blog is not going to be one of them. It’s not going away, but at the same time there’s not going to be an huge effort on my part to keep it up either. It’ll muddle along like always and I’ll make the best of it.
To the few of you survivors who kept up with it after the demise of the Google Reader, a heartfelt thanks to all of you, and frankly the friends I’ve met here are the reason I’m not shutting it down and deleting the site. There’s also something about having a body of work out there that’s a large as what I’ve done- 2500 posts and almost 2Million words that keeps me attached.
So my promise to you is more of the same; mundane interspersed with a few nuggets of goodness.
Happy New Year everyone, now I have some drawers to organize.
